Parents Empowering Teens to Succeed

Quiz: Parenting Pitfalls in College Admissions

As parents, we all want to do what’s best for our kids–especially when it comes to the daunting process of applying to college. But sometimes that means we have to grapple with our own baggage. This quiz was designed to help parents reflect on their challenges so that they can begin adjusting their mindset.

Welcome to Parenting Pitfalls in College Admissions

The goal of this quiz is to highlight parenting challenges that you face in the college admissions process. Answering honestly will give you the best results.

This quiz is meant to encourage reflection. It is not intended as a diagnostic or therapeutic tool.

I frequently check my teen’s work for careless errors before they turn it in.

I trust my teen to complete their college applications on schedule.

I frequently compare my teen’s college admissions prospects to those of their peers.

It is important for my teen to attend a prestigious school to ensure their success.

I feel comfortable intervening on my teen’s behalf when there is a grading issue at school.

College admissions are only looking for a specific “type,” and there’s not much my kid can do about it.

I make an effort to research and recommend some colleges that my teen could easily get into.

I worry about my teen getting their hopes up about a dream school, only to be rejected.

I have forced my teen to participate in or remain in an extracurricular activity to boost their college resume.

An interesting college application is more powerful than a flawless one.

College admissions have become so competitive that there is no use trying to get into a top school.

Even if we hit a roadblock in the application process, I know my teen and I can find a way to solve the problem.

When I think about a teen that only got into their “safety” schools, I feel:

A single low grade can ruin my teen’s chance of admission at a top school.

My teen’s past experiences have prepared them well for the future.

Failing to achieve goals during the college admissions process will jeopardize my teen’s future prospects.
